New Footage Revealed in Underworld: Awakening TV Spot and Third Trailer; Catch Up on the Series in New "Legacy" Video

Both the first and second trailers for the upcoming Underworld: Awakening have focused almost solely on Kate Beckinsale's return as the leather-clad vampire Selene after mostly sitting out of the 2009 prequel Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, but the first TV spot for the sequel actually spends some time on the movie's story. In Awakening, Selene awakens from a 12-year coma only to find that her Vampire/Lycan hybrid daughter (India Eisley) is being used as a pawn in the war humanity has waged on the supernatural.
As Selene says the TV spot, "this is a new war," and indeed, Sony's Screen Gems is likely hoping that Awakening will open the door for more sequels. Last week, Awakening co-director Björn Stein (Shelter) told ShockTillYouDrop that the fourth installment "is the beginning of something new," adding that "our ending is totally leaving the door open for a future."
Whether or not that's true will depend on the success of Awakening, which is essentially the first sequel in almost six years. To get audiences prepared for the sequel, a new "Underworld legacy" video has been created that quickly goes through the story behind 2003's Underworld, 2006's Underworld: Evolution and Rise of the Lycans to help bring potential audience members up to speed on the story behind the franchise. A seemingly bored Beckinsale introduces the video.
If that's not enough for you, there's also a third trailer released for Awakening, revealed by Bloody-Disgusting. With the sequel's release less than a month away, Screen Gems is definitely hoping to get audiences' attention with this much promotional material released around the same time.
Awakening was written by John Hlavin (TV's The Shield) with rewrites by J. Michael Straczynski (Changeling) and directed by Stein and Mans Marlind. Michael Ealy, Stephen Rea, Charles Dance, and Theo James also star.
