Police Academy Remake in the Works with Tosh.0 Director at the Helm

After the seventh installment in the Police Academy series, earned a dismal $126,000 in 1994, it was thought that the juggernaut of low-brow humor movie franchises had finally run its course after taking in a combined total of nearly $240 million in 10 years. However, New Line Cinema obviously feels that enough time has passed for the franchise to make a revival because the studio is planning a new Police Academy movie. According to Deadline, New Line has hired Scott Zabielski — whose credits include directing several seasons worth of episodes of the (some might say equally low-brow) Comedy Central viral video clip show Tosh.0 hosted by comedian Daniel Tosh — to helm the remake as his feature debut.
Deadline did not provide any additional details about New Line's new Police Academy movie except to call it a "remake." Back in the early '00s, series creator Paul Maslansky was pitching an eighth movie that would have reunited original cast members Steve Guttenberg as Carey Mahoney and Michael Winslow as Larvell Jones and remained in the continuity of the original series, but it's unlikely that New Line will go that route, instead bringing in an entirely new class of recruits.
If all this talk of Police Academy has made you a bit nostalgic, here's a blast from the past for you: the trailer for the original Police Academy.
