Richard Schiff Confirms Role in Man of Steel; New Destructive Set Pic Arrives

Recent casting news had actor Richard Schiff (West Wing, The Lost World: Jurassic Park) joining director Zack Snyder's upcoming Superman reboot, Man of Steel, which seemed a little strange since the movie has already been shooting since August of last year. In an interview with I Am Rogue, Schiff revealed that he had actually been cast "over the summer" but is only now joining the production "for the last six weeks."
Reportedly, Schiff was cast as a character named Dr. Hamilton, which comic book fans instantly thought to be the DC Comics character Dr. Emil Hamilton, a genius-level inventor and former employee of S.T.A.R. Labs who has alternately been Superman's ally and enemy throughout the character's comic book history. Schiff played coy at first, and would not outright confirm that his character is the same Dr. Hamilton from the comic books.
I am not allowed to say but I will allow people to draw their own conclusions. They obviously have the same first and last name, so they can draw their own conclusions. I want to live up to the promise to not reveal anything I’m not allowed to reveal.
Schiff then did admit that his character first name is also "Emil" and said that he didn't draw much inspiration for the character from the comic books.
Dr. Hamilton came along very late, didn’t he [1987, to be exact]? So I don’t even know if I would be able to find those (comic books). Can you find those online? I don’t know? So not so much, I mean I did some research into who he was and who people interpret him to be. Obviously he has had incarnations on a number of different mediums, on TV and in animation. They always get interpreted differently so you have to go with what the script has to offer and I’ve been very intrigued but what they’ve written. I wouldn’t impose some outside idea on what Zack and the writers want to do with this. But it is fun to know all the various incarnations that he’s had. Obviously he’s been evil in some incarnations, and friendly in other incarnations, and a combination of both in yet other incarnations, so that is fun to have in your mind when you are playing him. But the script goes in certain directions and that is what I will follow.
Schiff would say that his character is "obviously a scientist and he enjoys his work, let’s put it that way" and revealed that he has "already started shooting" some scenes for the movie.
I go back again this weekend and shoot for another couple of weeks and then will go elsewhere. So I’ve gotten my feet wet and have worked with Amy Adams [who plays Lois Lane], Chris Meloni [who plays a general] and a few others. I’ve gotten to know Zack and he is fantastic. That guy is just an upbeat happy guy.
Schiff also confirmed that he will appear in scenes with Henry Cavill, who plays Superman, but outside of his confirmation Schiff added: "and that is all I can say."
With shooting still continuing on the movie, new set photos have arrived online, with some revealing Kevin Costner walking from the set as Jonathan Kent, Superman's adoptive father, while another set photo of a truck shows the kind of destruction audiences can expect from Man of Steel.
Man of Steel was written by David S. Goyer (The Dark Knight) from a story he conceived with producer Christopher Nolan (Inception, The Dark Knight Rises) that reportedly follows a pre-Superman Clark Kent discovering his powers and trying to find his place in the world. The cast includes Michael Shannon as General Zod; Diane Lane as Martha Kent; Laurence Fishburne as Perry White, editor-in-chief of the Daily Planet; and Russell Crowe and Ayelet Zurer as Superman's Kryptonian parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, respectively.
