Insidious 2 Headed for a 2013 Release

Considering the micro-budget horror movie Insidious turned out to be the most profitable movie of 2011 — the movie was made for $1.5 million and earned $97 million worldwide — it comes as no surprise that FilmDistrict would like to turn the movie into a franchise. What is surprising is that it has taken this long to get confirmation that a sequel is in the works. Producer Jason Blum said last year that director James Wan (Saw movies) would only consider making a sequel if screenwriter Leigh Whannell came up "with a story that's inventive" and "worth making." Well, apparently he has because THR reports Wan and Whannell are currently "in talks" with the studio about Insidious 2, and that the movie will likely go into production this year, aimed at a 2013 release.
Oren Peli, the director of Paranormal Activity and co-producer of Insidious, will apparently not be as involved with Insidious 2, leaving Blum to take on an executive producing role. It's unclear at this time whether original stars Rose Byrne and Patrick Wilson will return. The first movie definitely left the door open for a direct sequel by having [SPOILER ALERT!] Wilson's character become possessed at the end of the movie. But even if Byrne and Wilson don't return the concept of "The Further" — a dark and mysterious spiritual world populated by tormented souls that some psychics can travel to by astral projecting — is so expansive that Wan and Whannell could easily go off in a totally different direction for Insidous 2.
