Robert Rodriguez to Shoot Machete Kills in April

Last July, Robert Rodriguez admitted at last year's Comic-Con that a sequel to his faux-trailer-turned-real-movie Machete was officially on its way, months after Machete star Danny Trejo revealed that Rodriguez had already scripted the sequel, teased before the ending credits of the 2010 action movie as Machete Kills. With funding squared away, Deadline reports that Rodriguez is looking to start shooting in April.
"The fan response to the Machete character has been fanatical since his first appearance," said Rodriguez. "Machete is truly a superhero and Machete Kills will be bigger and more ambitious than the first time."
According to the report, Trejo will return as the title character, who is recruited by the U.S. government to take down a Mexican drug cartel leader and a billionaire arms dealer who have a simple plan to start a world war with a weapon in space. Sounds insane, and explains why Rodriguez previously revealed that the third installment, Machete Kills Again, would be set in space.
While Rodriguez and his brother Marcel helped develop the script, it was Kyle Ward (Kane & Lynch) who actually wrote Machete Kills, which should bring back other characters from the original. Considering how Jessica Alba worked with Rodriguez on Machete as well as 2011's Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World — not to mention the fate of her character of Sartana Rivera in the original movie — we expect Alba to end up in the sequel.
