Casting News: Natalie Portman Goes Back to Work on Two Terrence Malick Movies; Jason Statham to Star in Heat Remake

After winning an Oscar for Black Swan and giving birth to her son, actress Natalie Portman is going back to work. She will start with two back-to-back movies with director Terrence Malick, who was recently nominated for an Oscar himself for last year's drama The Tree of Life.
According to Deadline, Portman will first appear in Knight of Cups alongside Christian Bale (The Dark Knight), Cate Blanchett (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Isabel Lucas (Immortals). Shooting on Knight of Cups begins this summer, and then Portman will move on to Lawless alongside Bale and Blanchett again, as well as Ryan Gosling (Drive), Rooney Mara (The Girl With the Dragon tattoo) and Haley Bennett (Marley & Me). Lawless starts production in the fall.
What the two movies are about is unknown, but since most people that have seen The Tree of Life are still wondering what that was about, we're not sure plot details would be significant anyway. At least he's titled the movies, which is more than he's done for his upcoming romantic drama starring Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, and Rachel McAdams. So, it's a start.
Portman is still attached to work on Thor 2, which will reportedly start production sometime this summer under the direction of Alan Taylor (Palookaville). After that, Portman is also reportedly being courted for Andy and Lana Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending, the writer-directors' planned follow-up to upcoming sci-fi movie, Cloud Atlas.
Also keeping busy is British action movie star Jason Statham, who won't be working with Malick, but has signed up to produce and star in a remake of 1987's Heat (the one with Burt Reynolds, not the one with Al Pacino and Robert De Niro).
ComingSoon reports that Statham will be in good company, as the remake has legendary director Brian De Palma (Scarface, The Untouchables) set to helm a script by Academy Award–winning screenwriter William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid), who also wrote the original Heat novel and screenplay. Statham will play the Reynolds role of a recovering gambling addict who makes his living providing protection for those who work in the gambling trade. Refusing to use a gun, Statham's character gets into trouble when he decides to help a friend exact revenge against a high-rolling mobster.
According to the report, Heat will start principal photography in France in late 2012 or early 2013.
