Welsh writer-director Gareth Evans' (Merantau) Indonesian action movie, The Raid, was a big hit at last year's Toronto International Film Festival, where it debuted as the opening movie during the Midnight Madness genre festival-within-a-festival. Though criticized by some for having a thin plot, most of the reviews have lauded it for its action, with one reviewer describing it as a "high octane action flick" that proves "amazing, innovative film making" is being done outside of Hollywood. To promote its upcoming theatrical release in America, Sony Pictures Classics has released a new trailer featuring the movie's new title: The Raid: Redemption.
Here's the official synopsis of the movie:
Rama, a member of a special forces team, arrives at a rundown apartment block with a mission to remove its owner, a notorious drug lord. The building has become a sanctuary to killers, gangs, rapists and thieves seeking accommodation in the one place they know they cannot be touched by the police. When a spotter blows their cover, Rama and his team must fight their way through every floor and every room not just to complete their mission but to survive their bloody ordeal.
