Who Wore it Best? Oscar 2012's Fashion Faceoffs
02.27.12 by Mandy
With every awards show, there are a few trends that stand out and a few stars who rock similar looks. We decided to put some of the nights most memorable looks head to head to see who made a look memorable, and who was just wearing some clothes.
Though many celebs took the night to wear some decidedly springtime fabrics and colors, others kept in mind that it is still actually February and went for a wintry look. Angelina Jolie and the record-breaking Christopher Plummer both looked cozy while wearing velvet, but who wore it best? While Ms. Jolie is turning up on plenty of best dressed lists for her Atelier Versace gown, we think Christoper Plummer looked positively regal and dashing in his velvet tux, and he didn't even need to flash any skin. So the 82-year-old award winner takes home the prize for Best in Velvet, too.
Miss Piggy and Tina Fey both looked gorgeous at last night's Oscars, Piggy in a golden Zac Posen gown and Fey wearing a navy Carolina Herrera frock. Though the two dresses were very different, both featured a peplum. While the peplum hasn't been getting much mileage for the past seventy years, it's bound to make a comeback now that a style icon like Miss Piggy wore it for red-carpet event. While both looks are positively smashing, there can only be one winner in this battle. The winner is probably Tina Fey, seeing as her dress exceeds in peplum-iness. Isn't it fun when awards shows and Project Runway turn obscure dressmaking terms mainstream?
All That Glitters
Girls who weren't even nominated were going for gold on Oscar night. From Cameron Diaz's subtle take on the color to the more glitzy version worn by Stacy Keibler, there was plenty of metallic shine on the red carpet. This was another trend that Miss Piggy was in on, as was one of the night's big winners, Meryl Streep. Jessica Chastain also rocked the gold, but went for a black background with some glitzy details. It's tough to pick a winner for this one, and it's almost tempting to go with a five-way tie. Gold is obviously Streep's lucky color because it was the color she wore back in 1983 when she won for Sophie's Choice, but this time we have to give the gold star to Miss Piggy — mainly because if she's mentioned in two categories, she has to win one. This is Miss Piggy we're talking about after all.
