Top Gun Sequel Getting Ready for Take Off?

There are likely many out there who aren't feeling the need for speed for a sequel to 1986's Top Gun, but with Tom Cruise poised to return as Maverick and director Tony Scott set to helm, the sequel seems destined for take off. Last December, Cruise said all the sequel needed was Scott, Cruise, and producer Jerry Bruckheimer to "find a story that suits, that we all want to do." Looks like they must have, as THR reports that The Town screenwriter Peter Craig is set to write the screenplay.
While his hiring shows how serious Paramount is about making the sequel, Craig is not the first writer hired for the gig. Shortly after the sequel was announced to be in the works last October, Scott said the script would be written by Christopher McQuarrie (The Usual Suspects, Valkyrie). However, McQuarrie is also the director of the upcoming Cruise thriller One Shot and, as Cruise revealed, McQuarrie's schedule got in the way. According to Variety, Thor and X-Men: First Class writers Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz were hired to write the Top Gun 2 script last October, but never put pen to paper, leaving Craig to start from scratch.
Pressure's on Craig to help make Top Gun 2 another legitimate franchise for Cruise after the massive success of Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol. Let's hope he's ready for a trip on the highway to the danger... well, you know.
