New The Avengers Photos Focus on Cobie Smulders as Maria Hill

Throughout the two released trailers (and Super Bowl ad) for The Avengers, fans have been given plenty of sneak peeks at "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" For instance, fans had to geek out at Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.) fighting not only together but also with each other, Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) leaping off a building with an arrow drawn, Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) running through an exploding hallway, and S.H.I.E.L.D. director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) admitting to Loki (Tom Hiddleston) that he is in a desperate situation.
What fans haven't seen is any footage of Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, outside of being briefly spoken to by fellow S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) in the comic book adaptation's second trailer. Marvel has responded by filling the void with two new photos from The Avengers that focus solely on Smulders as the comic book character.
A polarizing figure in Marvel's comic books, the character of Agent Hill was initially described by Jackson as a "sidekick" during the casting process. With so many heroes fighting for screen time in the movie, it's possible that Smulders won't play a huge role in the movie, but the How I Met Your Mother actress has admitted that she's contracted for more Marvel movies should the studio want to keep her around. If Smulders character receives the same fan reaction to Gregg's Coulson, who only appeared briefly in 2008's Iron Man only to evolve into a more central character that has even received his own Marvel short, we think Smulders will be fine.
Written and directed by Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Serenity), The Avengers co-stars Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig.
