What is it about robots...?
Director Ridley Scott's interest in androids has been on display in his previous sci-fi movies, 1979's Alien and 1982's Blade Runner. But his latest trip into the sci-fi realm — or at least the viral marketing for Prometheus — certainly raises the bar.
The first video for the movie was a fictional TEDTalk from 2023, in which CEO Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) revealed that his Weyland Industries can make "cybernetic individuals." The second viral clip had Weyland's reveal of the company's new android David, the character Michael Fassbender plays in Prometheus. However, at just 28 seconds, the clip only briefly showed David waking in his Styrofoam packaging.
We finally get a full introduction to the android in the movie's latest viral video, a two-and-a-half minute "ad" for the 8th-artificial worker that's "a must have for the employers of the future."
Alien fans know that Weyland Industries is half of the Weyland-Yutani corporation, which eventually hires the Nostromo and sends them to a planet where the first acid-bleeding xenomorph is discovered. In that movie, the fact that science officer Ash (Ian Holm) was an android was a secret kept from the crew, but in Prometheus it would seem that David's true nature won't be a mystery.
The Prometheus cast includes Noomi Rapace as Elizabeth Shaw, Idris Elba as Janek, Charlize Theron as Meredith Vickers, Sean Harris as Fifield, Rafe Spall as Milburn, and Logan Marshall-Green as Charlie Holloway. The movie was initially written by Jon Spaihts (The Darkest Hour) and rewritten by Damon Lindelof (Cowboys and Aliens, Lost).
