Considering how poorly Native Americans were portrayed in the early days of Hollywood, Walt Disney couldn't have asked for a better endorsement for the studio's in-production Lone Ranger adaptation than the one recently bestowed upon it by leaders of the Navajo Nation.
Navajo Nation President Ben Shelly and Vice President Rex Lee Jim visited the New Mexico set of the movie earlier this week and presented four Pendleton blankets to producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director Gore Verbinski, and the stars of the movie, Armie Hammer (John Reid, aka the Lone Ranger) and Johnny Depp (Tonto), as a good-will gesture from the Navajo Nation. Thankfully, ET was on hand to snap photos of the landmark event so that movie fans would have another opportunity to see Hammer and Depp in costume as the Wild West heroes.
