Be Ever So Thankful The Avengers Didn't Assemble in 1978 [video]

On May 4, comic book fans will finally get to see the ultimate superhero team on the big screen in The Avengers. But what if the Marvel movie really wasn't the first time that Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, Hulk, Black Widow, and Hawkeye all appeared together on screen?
Cue the hilarious and cringe-inducing YouTube clip of the "lost" Avengers movie from 1978. Here we see the team assemble to do battle with Loki... and KISS? (Remember, this was the '70s.) In this revision, Paul Lynde plays Loki and Alan Alda is Hawkeye. The mash-up uses footage from The Incredible Hulk TV series, the 1979 Captain America TV movie, and substitutes the 1977 movie Exo-Man — about a professor who, after being paralyzed, builds a metal suit allowing him to walk and fight crime — for Iron Man. The YouTube clip has already amassed 600,000 hits.
Aren't you glad we didn't have to grow up with this version of The Avengers? It just has us looking forward to Joss Whedon's version that much more.
