First Trailer for Gangster Squad Starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, and Sean Penn

It's been a while since we heard anything about Gangster Squad, basically since a couple photos arrived online in January. Last month, however, Warner Bros. decided to bump Gangster Squad out of its October release, handing the date instead to Ben Affleck's Argo and leaving Gangster Squad in limbo. Now that Warners has released the first trailer for the movie, we're not sure about the studio's reasoning.
Gangster Squad was based on the LA Times article "Tales from the Gangster Squad," written by Paul Lieberman, which tells the true story of how a special task force of LAPD officers was assigned to secretly target East Coast gangsters like "Mickey" Cohen (Sean Penn) who had moved into the city. Led by Sgt. John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), the "Gangster Squad" includes Michael Pena (30 Minutes or Less), Robert Patrick (Flags of Our Fathers), Anthony Mackie (The Hurt Locker), and Giovanni Ribisi. However, the trailer revolves mostly around Brolin, Gosling, and Penn, particularly in the love triangle that involves the latter two and Emma Stone.
Adapted by former LAPD officer and Castle writer Will Beall, Gangster Squad is a real change of pace for director Ruben Fleischer, who made his debut with the horror-comedy Zombieland and followed that with last year's disappointing buddy comedy 30 Minutes or Less. Based on the trailer, Fleischer seems more than up for the task and we're hoping Warner Bros. will find a place for the movie on its schedule soon. Frank Grillo (Warrior), Mireille Enos (AMC's The Killing), and Nick Nolte co-star.
