Though Marvel Studios President of Production Kevin Feige recently said The Avengers is devoid of the little hidden references commonly known as "easter eggs" that have populated previous studio releases — "I find that they're distracting. Joss [Whedon, writer-director] finds that they're distracting. Frankly we want Avengers to work as its own movie, as a part one." — there is at least one hidden "cameo" to be found.
In a new featurette titled "The Sound of The Avengers, sound editor Christopher Boyes (King Kong, 2005) explains the effects behind everything from Thor's (Chris Hemsworth) hammer to Cap's (Chris Evans) shield to the Black Widow's (Scarlett Johansson) karate kicks. He also reveals that TV Hulk Lou Ferrigno contributed to the voice of the Hulk in The Avengers.
Boyes explained that he tried "combination after combination" of sounds and voices before coming up with the final Hulk voice, which was a blend of the voices of Ferrigno, Mark Ruffalo, two New Zealanders, and his own.
Initially for Hulk, I started using all sorts of animal vocals and tried to create this larger-than-life, territorial rage... And so the feedback coming back from Joss [Whedon] was that it was too much of a monster, too much of a creature. He really wanted to lead with the notion that this is a superhuman, but human in rage.
The all-star Avengers cast includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, Tom Hiddleston as Loki, Clark Gregg as S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Coulson, Cobie Smulders S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent Maria Hill, Samuel L. Jackson as S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, Stellan Skarsgård as Erik Selvig, and Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts.
