Bradley Cooper seems attracted to playing characters who look for shortcuts to success. In Limitless (2011), Cooper played a struggling writer named Eddie who takes experimental mind-enhancing pills that allow him to not only complete his novel in a matter of days, but find financial success beyond his wildest dreams. In his new movie, The Words, Cooper plays a struggling writer named Rory who finds a brilliant manuscript and passes it off as his own, earning him the fame and success he has always craved.
Of course, there's always a price to pay for taking shortcuts. In Limitless, the success Eddie finds at the bottom of a pill bottle attracts the attention of nefarious characters who will stop at nothing to possess his secret. Similarly, in The Words, the success of Rory's novel forces the original author of the manuscipt (Jeremy Irons) out of the shadows to confront Rory with the truth about the lie he has been living.
Here's the official synopsis of The Words:
Rory Jansen, a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become.
The Words is the directorial debut of Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, who also wrote the screenplay together. Dennis Quaid, Olivia Wilde and J.K. Simmons also star.
