True Story: MacGruber Sequel in the Works

Everyone has that "guilty pleasure" comedy that was maligned by most. For this writer, it's Starship Troopers, and yes, it is a comedy — watch it again if you disagree. For others, that guilty pleasure is, apparently, Saturday Night Live skit-turned-movie MacGruber, which bombed at the box office back in May of 2010, even though it received mixed reviews. MacGruber fared better on DVD, where it earned about half of its worldwide box office.
For those who have the movie on disc and have defended that purchase to their friends, there's some good news. MacGruber director Jorma Taccone told Screen Crush that he and star Will Forte are planning a sequel.
It would be me, Will and John [Solomon] writing it again. Every time I hang out with Will, we talk about all our cool ideas for the sequel. We have the idea for it and we have a title, but I won’t tell you what it is.
Taccone was light on sequel details other than to say that, like Die Hard, the next MacGruber would be set during Christmas and would not have MacGruber and love interest Vikki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) with a baby in tow. "We don’t want to jump the shark that soon," said Taccone.
Of course, fans will have plenty of time to wait for another MacGruber. Forte was recently cast alongside Bruce Dern in the black-and-white father-son road trip drama Nebraska by director Alexander Payne (The Descendents). Taccone, on the other hand, is developing an unannounced project for Adam Sandler along with an adaptation of the Image comic book The Great Unknown.
Despite their busy schedules, Taccone stated that it doesn't mean that MacGruber 2 won't happen. "It would be a shame not to do another one," admitted Taccone. "Let's just say, for now, that the countdown has begun."
