Official Synopsis of Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim

With a title that hints at nothing more than location, it's no wonder that director Guillermo del Toro has taken every possible opportunity to explain that his new sci-fi movie, Pacific Rim, features gigantic mechanized robots battling gigantic monsters or "kaiju," as they are known in Japan (in contrast, Japanese kaiju movies are pretty easy to identify by title alone, e.g., 2001's Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack). Del Toro has spoken at length about his love of kaiju movies, even calling Pacific Rim a "very, very beautiful poem to giant monsters," but the actual plot of the movie has remained a mystery until now.
After a movie blogger posted an unconfirmed synopsis earlier this week, Warner Bros. sent out a one-pager containing the official synopsis of Pacific Rim, which ties together many of the story elements that del Toro has teased in the past and even confirms some of the information that NewsInFilm claimed to have gleaned from a copy of Travis Beacham's (Clash of the Titans remake) script well over a year ago. The release did not confirm MarketSaw's claim that the movie will be released in 3D, however.
When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity’s resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes — a washed up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi) — who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind’s last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
The cast of Pacific Rim includes Idris Elba, Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Diego Klattenhoff, Larry Joe Campbell, Burn Gorman, Brad William Henke, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini and Clifton Collins, Jr.. It is slated to open July 12, 2013.
