Mads Mikkelsen to Play Villain in Thor 2; Will Anthony Hopkins Return or Skip for RED 2?

Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen has made a living out of playing villains — in the U.S. anyway. After breaking into English-language movies in 2006's Casino Royale, Mikkelsen most recently appeared as the villain Rochefort in The Three Musketeers. Mikkelsen will continue this trend in Thor 2. Variety reports that the actor is in talks to play an undisclosed villain in the movie.
While Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is also set to return, Marvel president Kevin Feige has already revealed that Loki won't be the primary villain in the sequel like he was in Thor and The Avengers. Instead, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) will be tackling "another big villain," likely played by Mikkelsen.
Since there's no announcement of Mikkelsen's character, rumors will abound over the identity of the villain. Bleeding Cool recently reported that the powerful sorceress the Enchantress was certain to appear in the sequel, though the news came from an anonymous contact so the the report should be taken with a grain of salt. However, should the Enchantress make it into the sequel, that would mean that Skurge the Executioner, typically used by the Enchantress as muscle, would not be far behind. The two characters have been tormenting the comic book version of Thor since the mid-1960s, and it's possible that Mikkelsen could be playing the Executioner.
Furthering the Executioner speculation is that the Variety reports says Mikkelsen will play "one of the villains" in the sequel, though the report could be referencing Loki. This isn't the first time the Enchantress and Executioner have been rumored to be the sequel's villains — an identical one surfaced a year ago. Considering the pair are two of Thor's oldest villains, it seems natural that they would appear in the sequel, however, until we learn more, we'll just have to enjoy the rumors — for now.
Here's what we do know: Thor 2 will see plenty of familiar faces from the first movie, with Jamie Alexander returning as the Asgardian warrior Sif, and Idris Elba recently confirmed to return as Heimdall. Natalie Portman will also return as Jane Foster, but Thor 2 may be missing out on one of Thor's biggest stars: Anthony Hopkins as Odin.
Deadline reports that Hopkins is being courted by Summit Entertainment for the villain role in the sequel RED 2. Reportedly, Hopkins wants to take the role, but is committed to Thor 2 and is trying to make the dates work so he can do both. We're sure that both Marvel and Summit will work out some kind of accord, this is Hopkins we're talking about, after all.
Thor 2 will be directed by Alan Taylor (Game of Thrones, Palookaville) from a script by Thor screenwriter Don Payne and Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), who recently rewrote the script. Production is set to begin in August.
