The Wachowski's Jupiter Ascending to Be a Trilogy Starring Mila Kunis & Channing Tatum

After revolutionizing the sci-fi genre with The Matrix in 1999, everyone expected that Andy and Lana Wachowski would build a movie legacy to rival the likes of visionary filmmakers George Lucas or Steven Spielberg. But the diminishing quality of the two Matrix sequels and the mediocre (V For Vendetta) and truly dismal (Speed Racer) adaptations that followed left many wondering whether the siblings were already spent.
To top The Matrix may be an insurmountable task, but that doesn't mean that the Wachowskis are going to stop trying. The duo is currently in post-production on Cloud Atlas, an ambitious adaptation of David Mitchell's award-winning 2004 sci-fi novel that they co-wrote and and co-directed with German filmmaker Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run). It's comprised of six interconnected storylines, each taking place in different locations and time periods.
The Wachowskis have also been developing an original sci-fi movie as a follow-up to Cloud Atlas so shrouded in secrecy that all we know for sure is that it's called Jupiter Ascending and it will feature a female protagonist. However, if Vulture's inside source can be believed, Jupiter Ascending will simply be the first movie of a trilogy and Mila Kunis will play the female protagonist, a lowly maid possessing the "same perfect genetic makeup as the Queen of the Universe."
According to Vulture's source, the universe in which Cloud Atlas takes place is one in which humans are inferior beings compared to the "higher forms of life" that watch over us.
These evolved beings fall into various different groups, all of which share some human DNA but who have become evolved after being bred with animal DNA to heighten their best characteristics — e.g., soldiers getting their fearlessness, strength, and a pack mentality from wolves; workers getting their industriousness and reputation for diligence from bees.
The drama begins when the "evolved beings" discover that a Russian immigrant (Kunis) who scrubs toilets for a living carries the DNA of the Queen of the Universe, thus making her a threat to the Queen's "otherwise immortal rule." The Queen sends out an "evolved-being" bounty hunter to snuff out the threat posed by the inferior human, but he ends up falling in love with her instead. The two go on the run and "things get messy after that, because his employers take a-less-than-enlightened-being reaction to his decision to protect rather than kill her."
As pointed out by Vulture, this supposed Cloud Atlas storyline contains obvious parallels to such movies as Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman, but a fairy tale trilogy about a princess and a scoundrel set in space makes us think more of Star Wars than anything else and that's not a bad comparison to make. The only other piece of information offered by Vulture's source is that the bounty hunter role will be played by Channing Tatum, who has yet to live up to the potential he showed in A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints. But, if the Wachowskis could make us think of Keanu Reeves as a post-modern Superman instead of the dumbass from San Dimas, imagine what they could do for Tatum.
