First Look at Idris Elba in Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim

In a recent interview, British actor Idris Elba confirmed his return as Heimdall in Thor 2, describing the Marvel Studios movie as his "man in a suit film," but that description actually fits several of his recent movies. Elba can be seen sporting a blue space suit in Prometheus — currently in theaters — and thanks to the latest issue of Total Film Magazine, we now know that he'll be wearing a pretty snazzy black armored suit in director Guillermo del Toro's giant robots-versus-giant monsters movie, Pacific Rim.

Elba's role in Pacific Rim has yet to be revealed, but the suit looks like it could be the uniform of a Jaeger pilot. Jaegers are massive robots designed to combat the gigantic "Kaiju" (Japanese for "strange beast") that emerged from a portal or vortex in the sea and immediately began consuming humanity's resources and laying waste to entire population centers. The Jaegers require two pilots connected mentally via a "nearal bridge" to operate them, which means Elba could be paired with either of the characters played by Charlie Hunnam or Rinko Kikuchi, described in the official synopsis of the movie as a "washed up former pilot" and "an untested trainee" pilot, respectively. (Of course, that's assuming Elba's character does pilot a Jaeger and not some other high-tech machine/craft.)
We have no idea what the Jaegers or the Kaiju will look like at this point, but here's a fun fan-made poster for the movie created by TBD for your viewing pleasure:
The cast of Pacific Rim also includes Charlie Day, Ron Perlman, Diego Klattenhoff, Larry Joe Campbell, Burn Gorman, Brad William Henke, Robert Kazinsky, Max Martini and Clifton Collins, Jr.. It is slated to open July 12, 2013.
