Though superstar actor Tom Cruise's personal life seems to be in disarray, his movie career is on an upward trajectory once again. His last movie, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, was a huge success, raking in nearly $700 million worldwide, and Cruise is currently starring in Rock of Ages as abs-tastic '80s rocker Stacee Jaxx, which has been helping him earn back some of the female fans he lost following his infamous appearnce on The Oprah Show back in 2005. Next up, Cruise will be playing the eponymous character in Jack Reacher, an adaptation of author Lee Child's 2005 novel One Shot, and we recently got our first look at Cruise as the former Military Police Officer-turned-drifter who seems to be a trouble magnet.
After Jack Reacher, Cruise will play another "Jack" in Oblivion, a post-apocalyptic epic based on the upcoming Radical Publishing graphic novel of the same name created by Tron: Legacy director Joseph Kosinski, who also directs. Cruise started filming Oblivion in Louisiana a few months ago, but it has since moved on to Iceland, where an amateur photographer managed to snap several photos of Cruise on the set, wearing the environment suit of Jack, a drone (read: clone) who maintains and repairs the machinery left behind by humanity to extract the last of the earth's resources after the planet has been all but abandoned.
On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.
Here's the synopsis of Oblivion:
Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete. Living and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.
The cast of Oblivion includes Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace), Andrea Riseborough (W.E.), Morgan Freeman (The Dark Knight Rises) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (HBO's Game of Thrones). The screenplay was written by Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine), from previous drafts by Academy Award–winning screenwriter William Monahan (The Departed) and Karl Gadjusek (Trespass).
