There's always a deluge of new information about upcoming movies once the San Diego Comic-Con gets underway, but the programming schedule for the 2012 convention has already provided us with some juicy new details about M. Night Shyamalan's upcoming sci-fi movie, After Earth (formerly One Thousand A.E.). The listing for the After Earth panel presentation on Saturday, July 14, includes a detailed synopsis that reveals not only the names of the characters played by Will Smith and his son, Jaden (The Karate Kid), but a bit about their personalities and motivations, as well as details about how they ended up crashing on the "now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth" in the first place.
In After Earth, one thousand years after cataclysmic events forced humanity’s escape from Earth, Nova Prime has become mankind’s new home. Legendary General Cypher Raige (played by Will Smith) returns from an extended tour of duty to his estranged family, ready to be a father to his 13-year-old son, Kitai (played by Jaden Smith). When an asteroid storm damages Cypher and Kitai’s craft, they crash-land on a now unfamiliar and dangerous Earth. As his father lies dying in the cockpit, Kitai must trek across the hostile terrain to recover their rescue beacon. His whole life, Kitai has wanted nothing more than to be a soldier like his father. Today, he gets his chance.
The After Earth panel presentation starts at 10 a.m. and will be held in Room 6A of the San Diego Convention Center. Screenwriter Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) and director of photography Peter Suschitzky (A Dangerous Method) will be on hand to discuss the movie, along with several of the creators of the comic book After Earth: Innocence that will serve as a prequel to the movie.
