Amazing Spider-Man 2 Won't Jump Forward in Time, Says Producer

Comic book adaptation The Amazing Spider-Man has yet to open in the U.S., but is already a hit overseas. Throughout parts of Asia, in fact, Sony's reboot of the Spider-Man franchise is already breaking box office records, contributing to a total of $50.2 million over the weekend according to Box Office Mojo. That's good news for Sony, who have already scheduled a release date for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, with screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman working on rewrites on the initial script from James Vanderbilt.
While details on the sequel are scarce, producer Matt Tolmach told MTV that The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will take place shortly after the first and won't jump forward in time, despite the fact that actor Andrew Garfield is nearing his thirties yet will still have to play Peter Parker as a teenager.
Eventually, who knows? But the next movie will take place in relative proximity to this one. Because, the story, there's a lot more to be told in this story, and in this quest that he's on. So there's not going to be a huge time jump because we have more business to do here with the character.
As for who will be returning, Emma Stone recently revealed that she's "excited" about the sequel, and Garfield remained positive yet practical in an interview with THR, saying: "If we do one, I hope I can do it — I hope they'd let me do it. I hope so."
Then there's director Marc Webb. Initially a curious choice to direct The Amazing Spider-Man considering his only other feature was the 2009 romantic dramedy (500) Days of Summer. During an interview with The Playlist, Webb admitted that he'd "had conversations" about a sequel, but wouldn't publicly commit.
I'm so focused on finishing the process. I love this process and I think Andrew and Emma are some of the most talented actors and it's a joy to work and watch them and it's been fantastic. But it's like asking a woman who's just given birth if they want to get pregnant again. I'm still nursing the baby!
That "baby" will finally be born on July 3rd (in the States). The Amazing Spider-Man cast includes Denis Leary as Captain George Stacy, Rhys Ifans as Dr. Curt Connors, aka the Lizard, Irrfan Khan as Van Atter, C. Thomas Howell as Ray, Chris Zylka as Flash Thompson, Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, and Sally Field as Aunt May.
