First Trailer for Jack Reacher Starring Tom Cruise

In what probably isn't the best week for actor Tom Cruise, Universal does a have a birthday gift for the now-divorcing 50 year old — the first trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Jack Reacher, where Cruise stars as the title character, an ex-Military Police turned drifter who lives off the grid.
Based on the popular character created by author Lee Child, Jack Reacher was adapted from the novel One Shot, the ninth in the series (the 17th volume is due this fall). Jack Reacher follows the character as he investigates the deaths of five individuals whom were all killed by a lone sniper. Joined by defense attorney Helen Rodin (Rosamund Pike), Reacher attempts to bring the real culprits to justice after an innocent man is charged with the murders. None of that is particularly present in the trailer, which is more interested in positing Reacher as the ultimate, rule-breaking bad-ass. While many may have trouble seeing Cruise in that light, we'll note that he played a fairly convincing villain in 2004's Collateral.
Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie (The Way of the Gun), Jack Reacher co-stars Robert Duvall (Days of Thunder), Richard Jenkins (Let Me In) and David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).
