Iron Man 3: San-Diego Comic-Con Concept Art Poster Released Online

When it comes to promoting its upcoming superhero movies in advance of the San Diego Comic-Con, Marvel Studios pretty much has the formula perfected — quietly release online the stunning concept art movie posters that will be handed out on the floor of the San Diego Convention Center and leave the masses gasping in awe and wondering what the depicted scene means to the plot of the movie. In anticipation of SDCC 2010, Marvel released two stunning posters for its 2011 releases: a cosmic battle scene from Thor depicting Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and his wayward adopted brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston) going at it; and a dark, gritty scene from Captain America: The First Avenger showing Cap (Chris Evans) wading into battle against unseen enemies (Nazi off-shoot HYDRA). Last year, Marvel released seven posters for this year's super-movie, The Avengers, that offered detailed looks at each of the team members in action without revealing who the villains (aliens) of the movie would turn out to be.
We're just over one week away from the opening of SDCC 2012 and, true to form, Marvel has released the concept art poster for Iron Man 3 that will make many lucky convention-goers beam from ear to ear once they get it in their hot little hands, but also leave them scratching their heads. Unlike the previous concept art posters, which showed the heroes in action, this one shows Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.) caught with his (iron) pants down — Stark only wears a single glove of armor and his boots. What happened to that nifty bracelet he wore in The Avengers that called his entire suit of armor to him all at once? Is it an experimental suit? Why is it smoking? Who are the goons with guns? Questions, questions. Oh, Marvel, you are devious...
Iron Man 3 is currently in production under the direction of Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), from a script he co-wrote with Drew Pearce (No Heroics TV movie). The plot remains a mystery, but it appears that it will be loosely based on comic book writer Warren Ellis' popular "Extremis" storyline from the Iron Man comic books. Joining Downey, Jr. in returning are Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan, Gwyneth Paltrow as Pepper Potts, and Don Cheadle as Lt. James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine. New additions include Guy Pearce as geneticist Aldrich Killian, Rebecca Hall as Maya Hansen (unconfirmed), James Badge Dale as Eric Savin (who possibly becomes the cyborg Coldblood) and Ashley Hamilton as Jack Taggert (who possibly becomes the cyborg Firepower). Sir Ben Kingsley has also joined the cast, presumably as the Mandarin, but this has yet to be confirmed.
