The Avengers Movie-verse Grows: First Look at New Short Item 47
07.03.12 by BJSprecher
With everyone's favorite S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), er, out of the picture following the events in The Avengers, many fans were left wondering who would take his place in the next One-Shot short film that will be included with the home video release of the record-setting super-team movie. EW was the first to get the scoop about the new short, titled Item 47, and, while S.H.I.E.L.D. agents do appear in the short, the focus shifts from the super-secret spy agency to a piece of tech ("Item 47") left behind following The Avengers' battle with the Chitauri and the pair of "hapless young troublemakers" (Lizzy Caplan and Jesse Bradford) who find it.
Item 47 was written by Eric Pearson, who also wrote the previous two shorts, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Thor’s Hammer and The Consultant, and it clocks in at 12 minutes in length, which is more than the previous two shorts combined. Is Marvel building toward even longer shorts that could be used to introduce "name" characters like Dr. Strange, Iron Fist or Luke Cage? Marvel Studios co-President Louis D’Esposito, who directed Item 47, says that there is the "potential" for that to happen.
We have 8,000 of them, and they can’t all be at the same level. So maybe there are some that are not so popular, and we introduce them [with a short] — and they take off. I could see that happening.
Of course, fans might just be fond enough of the "troublemakers" in Item 47 to demand that they make a repeat appearance. After all, what sci-fi/superhero fan hasn't dreamed of coming across a lightsaber, freeze ray, shrink gun, laser blaster or some such fantastical item at one point or another? Realistically, what would you use, say, a lightsaber for, anyway? It seems like such items would really only be useful in the hands of criminals, which brings us to Claire (Caplan) and Benny (Bradford). Here's what D’Esposito said about the situation the pair find themselves in after finding a Chitauri gun in Item 47:
The world is topsy-turvy now. There’s been an alien invasion, and things are crazy. So when this gun literally fell into their lap, this is a sign: We’re going to rob a few banks, we’re going to buy a boat, we’re going to the Caribbean, and all our problems will be solved.
Item 47 will be included on The Avengers Blu-ray when it is released on September 25th, but attendees of the San Diego Comic-Con will have an opportunity to view a special screening of the short next week.
