Guardians of the Galaxy Gets a New Screenwriter

The biggest question mark on Marvel Studios' upcoming slate has to be Guardians of the Galaxy, which the studio formally announced would arrive in theaters in 2014 at the San Diego Comic-Con last month. On one hand, the team is a collection of heroes who mostly seek revenge on Thanos, the mysterious villain depicted in the first post-credits scene in The Avengers. On the other hand, the team is made up of a talking raccoon and a sentient tree, among others, which certainly seems like a gamble.
Marvel's pick of screenwriter has also been risky with newcomer Nicole Perlman, a graduate of Marvel's now-defunct writing program, whose script involving team leader Star-Lord, superhuman warrior Drax the Destroyer, the genetically-engineered Rocker Raccoon, giant tree-creature Groot and Thanos' adopted daughter Gamora, pleased Marvel enough to move forward with the project. Still, with plenty of time left before Guardians has to go in front of cameras, Marvel has made another risky choice in a writer for rewrites.
THR reports that Marvel has tapped screenwriter Chris McCoy to rewrite Guardians. If his name doesn't ring any bells, that because, like Perlman, McCoy is essentially a newcomer as well, with three of his screenplays landing on the infamous Black List of unproduced screenplays. According to the report, McCoy's scripts have been "praised for their quirky comedic bent," which is likely a good thing for the script. Perlman's previous scripts were both reportedly space-related biopics.
There aren't many studios that would hire two relative unknowns to write the first installment of a potential franchise with a multi-million dollar budget, but Marvel president Kevin Feige has previously revealed that he welcomed the risk associated with Guardians of the Galaxy. "The majority of people go, 'Did you say a raccoon and a tree?'" said Feige in April. "'Oh yeah, they're going to steal the whole movie. They're hilarious.' 'Okay, I'll believe it when I see it.' I like that."
