Second chances and soccer moms
When Hollywood needs a leading man seeking redemption, it's starting to look no further than Gerard Butler. After playing a former biker gang member turned preacher as he did in last year's Machine Gun Preacher, Butler will next play a veteran big wave surfer who trains a younger novice in Chasing Mavericks and then a former soccer pro looking to win back his family in Playing For Keeps (formerly Playing the Field). The latter won't be out until December, and finally has its first trailer online.
The dramedy, directed Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, Seven Pounds), sees Butler as George Dryer, a former soccer player whose play off the field has lost him a wife (Total Recall's Jessica Biel) and his son (The Walking Dead's Noah Lomax). When Dryer moves to Virginia to coach his son's soccer team and get his life back together, a new career opportunity presents itself after Dryer meets former sportscaster Denise (Catherine Zeta-Jones). There's also supposed to be plenty of Butler hooking up with soccer moms in the movie, though that angle has been dropped in lieu of a more heartfelt trailer.
Playing For Keeps co-stars Dennis Quaid (The Day After Tomorrow), Uma Thurman (Kill Bill) and Judy Greer (The Descendents).
