Go Behind the Scenes of Battleship's Visual Effects

The board game-to-movie adaptation of Battleship opened to decidedly mixed reviews but still managed to earn over $300 million at the box office, particularly overseas. The movie followed Naval officer Lt. Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch) attempts to protect the planet from an alien invasion while simultaneously trying to impress his girlfriend's father, Admiral Shane (Liam Neeson).
But wait, did anyone actually watch Battleship for its plot? Not likely. It was the visual effects that brought the crowds out to the theaters, so they could watch massive naval ships attempt to blow other massive ships out of the water. Hollywood Dailies went to Industrial Light & Magic to get a look behind the scenes at Battleship's extensive visual effects, and learned how the company created the alien creatures in the movie, which were ordered by director Peter Berg (Hancock) to look different from your "run-of-the-mill, slimy-looking creatures."
More of Battleship's visual effects are explored in the extras on the Blu-Ray, which is now available for rent and purchase. Check out the movie's trailer below.
Written by Jon and Erich Hoeber (Whiteout), Battleship co-stars Josh Pence, Brooklyn Decker, Alexander Skarsgard, and Tadanobu Asano.
