Joss Whedon Calls James Gunn's Take on Guardians of the Galaxy "Very Twisted"

Marvel had yet to officially announce the director of its next new franchise, Guardians of the Galaxy, when The Avengers director Joss Whedon beat them to the punch by revealing that James Gunn would not only be directing the movie, but performing rewrites on the screenplay, as well. Whedon told MTV that Gunn's take on Guardians was "very twisted" and that the director himself would be the ingredient that makes such a weird cast of characters — including a walking tree named Groot and a talking raccoon named Rocker Raccoon — fit into the cinematic universe that Marvel is creating.
James is what makes me think it will work. I myself was sort of like, "I liked Rocket Raccoon as a kid, but I'm not sure how that plays." And then they said, "Well, we're thinking about using James Gunn." And I'm like, "Oh, then no, you're fine." Because he is so off the wall, and so crazy, but so smart, such a craftsman and he builds from his heart. He loves the raccoon. Needs the raccoon. He wrote The Specials ... and Super. He's got a very twisted take on it, but it all comes from a real love of the material. So you know it's gonna be hard for the humans to keep up.
