Del Toro Does Baby Mama Horror
We love just about everything that Guillermo del Toro has a hand in, so we're holding out hope that, despite the clichéd creepy crawlies, pretty ridiculous premise and terrible title, he has infused his latest production, Mama, with some of his magic.
Written and directed by Andres Muschietti and based on his two-shot Spanish short of the same name, Mama centers around two feral orphaned sisters — Victoria (Megan Charpentier) and Lilly (Isabelle Nélisse) — who are discovered living in the woods and taken in by their uncle Lucas (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and his partner Annabel (Jessica Chastain). But, as if dealing with the feral girls' strange behavior isn't difficult enough, Lucas and Annabel also face a malevolent spirit the girls call "Mama" that appears to have followed them out of the woods with the intention of reclaiming them.
