Reelz Recommends: The First Rian Johnson and Joseph Gordon-Levitt Pairing

Before Looper there was Brick
What's the movie? The 2005 indie and overlooked Brick from writer/director Rian Johnson and starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a loner teen who investigates the disappearance of his ex-girlfriend.
Why we recommend it: For his directorial debut, Johnson hit it out of the park with this neo-noir thriller. This movie came out just before Levitt really hit it big and was probably still known as "that kid from 3rd Rock from the Sun." Brick proved his acting skills extended far beyond playing a goofy alien. With Johnson and Levitt's Looper hitting theaters this weekend, now is a perfect time to catch Brick.
Not a quitter: Johnson wrote the original screenplay for Brick in 1997 but it took him six years to get funding for the project (Brick's budget was less than $500,000, compared to Looper's $30M).
Where to watch it: Brick is currently available on Netflix (only until Oct. 1), Amazon, and iTunes.
