Today's Hot Animated Trailer: Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 Reveals Showdown Between Batman and Superman

Keep your Batman fix going.
Batman fans were both (mostly) elated and dejected with The Dark Knight Rises, which added a new chapter to director Christopher Nolan's Batman movies, but also ended the franchise as a trilogy. Stepping in to fill the void is Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part 1, which was released on DVD and Blu-Ray last month.
Based on the seminal comic book arc by Frank Miller (Sin City, 300), The Dark Knight Returns is set in dystopian future Gotham, where Batman (voiced by Robocop's Peter Weller) has retired after the death of his second Robin, Jason Todd. With crime ruling the streets, Batman returns to face Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face (voiced by Wade Andrew Williams, who plays the warden of Blackgate prison in The Dark Knight Rises), armed with a new Robin, thirteen-year-old Carrie Kelley (voiced by Modern Family's Ariel Winter). The Dark Knight Returns has been a property that plenty of directors have wanted to turn into movies (300 director Zack Snyder admitted in 2009 that he approached Warner Bros. about the possibility), but, considering the dark subject matter, this animated adaptation may be as close as fans will ever get. The Dark Knight Returns Part 2 won't be out until next year, but a new trailer has already arrived, revealing Michael Emerson (Lost) as the Joker and Batman's inevitable showdown with Superman (Mark Valley), who doesn't approve of Batman's methods.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Part Two will debut on DVD and Blu-Ray in winter of 2013, but for those attending the New York Comic-Con, there will be new footage revealed at the movie's panel discussion.
