Reelz Recommends: Yet Another Reason to Not Go Camping... or to New Jersey
10.11.12 by BJSprecher
Go out to the woods, have a few laughs.
Round up the kids and load up the station wagon for a relaxing vacation in the creepy-but-beautiful Pine Barrens of Southern New Jersey, where you just might catch a glimpse of a Gray Fox, Southern Flying Squirrel, Woodland Vole or the Jersey Devil.
The Flick: The Barrens
The Skinny: Writer-director Darren Lynn Bousman's (Saw II, III & IV, Repo! The Genetic Opera) latest tones down the splatter, but ups the suspense in this direct-to-DVD horror thriller that invokes the legendary Jersey Devil, a bipedal winged horse that has supposedly stalked the Pine Barrens for hundreds of years.
The Players: Stephen Moyer (HBO's True Blood) stars as Richard Vinyard, a man struggling to cope with the recent loss of his father and the growing tension between his daughter (Allie MacDonald) and his new wife (Mia Kirshner). Richard thinks that a camping trip will help his family bond, but inclement weather, a bad infection and a punk kid telling scary stories combine to turn the family outing into a nightmare. Peter DaCunha and Eric Knudsen also star.
