"I've got a lot of apologies to make."
After not one but two trailer teasers, Marvel Studios have released the first trailer for Iron Man 3. As revealed in the synopsis, Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is going to see his personal life "destroyed," which takes on literal and figurative examples in the trailer. Clearly affected by the events of The Avengers, Stark's latest villain won't be an intergalactic army. Instead, it's The Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), who points out in the trailer that he is not "a terrorist" but rather "a teacher." If that's true, then he's saving his biggest lesson for Stark, who looks like he might be without a home and the one he loves.

While Stark's home certainly gets a remodel and it appears that Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) won't be spending all her time in Stark Tower, it may be the trailer's closing seconds that are the most revealing, where the title of Iron Man 3 goes dark. As Marvel President Kevin Feige recently pointed out to EW, Iron Man 3 will feature characters going in and out of "the shadows."
A lot of this movie is about characters going back into the shadows for various reasons and characters who have been in the shadows coming out and into the light for the first time. It is Tony who, for various reasons, finds himself receding into the darkness. I don’t mean emotional darkness, I mean literally ducking out of the spotlight. And we’ll see other characters stepping up who have pulled strings from the background, starting to show their hand.
Iron Man's longtime nemesis from the comic books, fans have been clamoring for The Mandarin to appear in the Iron Man movies, and, likely, will be pleased with the depiction of the character, outside of Mandarin lacking his Chinese heritage. "It’s less about his specific ethnicity than the symbolism of various cultures and iconography that he perverts for his own end," explained Feige. Hey, at least he still has his ten rings.
Lastly, as we may need to wait a while for the next Iron Man 3 trailer, here's the teaser poster below, revealing Stark amongst the older versions of his armor, not unlike the first photo that was released from the sequel. Check it out below.
Iron Man 3 was written by Drew Pearce and director Shane Black (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) and sees the return of Don Cheadle as James "Rhodey" Rhodes/War Machine, and Jon Favreau as Happy Hogan. Newcomers include Guy Pearce, Rebecca Hall, Ashley Hamilton and James Badge Dale.
