VOD Recommendation: A Frenzied Screwball Dramedy About Strippers and Gamblers Coming Soon on Demand
10.30.12 by BJSprecher
"As luck would have it, this is based on a true story."
Pack your bags for a trip to Las Vegas for a crash course in post-stripper career opportunities and sports gambling taught by an eclectic cast of Hollywood heavyweights and a plucky British scene-stealer.
The Flick: Lay the Favorite
The Skinny: Award-winning British director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Tamara Drewe) delivers a somewhat scattered and often frenetic adaptation of Beth Raymer's memoir of the same name that is redeemed by its impressive ensemble cast. (Bonus points for gratuitous nudity.)
The Players: Rebecca Hall (The Town) stars as Beth Raymer, a good-hearted former "private dancer" with a big personaity who discovers a hidden talent for numbers after getting a job assisting a professional gambler named Dink (Bruce Willis) with his sports betting operation in Las Vegas. After Dink is forced to fire Beth to appease his jealous wife (Catherine Zeta-Jones), Beth moves to New York to work for one of Dink's rivals (Vince Vaughn), which lands her in hot water with the law. Joshua Jackson, Laura Prepon, and Corbin Bernsen also star.
