Try the Soy Sauce: Surreal Trailer for John Dies at the End Enters Another Dimension

Hint: the "soy sauce" is not actually soy sauce.
Writer-director Don Coscarelli has made a career out of making strange horror movies like the Phantasm franchise, which followed the efforts to stop a mysterious alien called the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm) and his army of Jawa-like zombie dwarfs from taking over the world, or horror comedies like 2002's Bubba Ho-Tep, which starred Bruce Campbell as a not-dead Elvis Presley who teams with a not-dead JFK (Ossie Davis) to fight off an ancient mummy that's stalking a nursing home. Still, fans of those cult movies may be in for a surprise with Coscarelli's next effort, John Dies at the End.

Ostensibly, the movie follows the typical Coscarelli formula: Two regular guys (college dropouts John and David) stumble upon a drug called "soy sauce" that truly pays off with an out-of-body experience that delivers meat monsters, dimensional travel, and, if the title is any indication, an ending we can safely predict. The final trailer for John Dies at the End has debuted on iTunes Movie Trailers, offering a fresh look at Coscarelli's surreal new movie. Check it out below.
John Dies at the End won't open until next year, but has been touring the festival circuit since it debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in January, a screening that prompted HitFix to say that "Coscarelli balances on the fine line between creepy and hilarious" in a movie that has "real mainstream possibilities, even if it is willfully strange." When John Dies at the End moved to the Toronto International Film Festival, Variety said the movie was "a thoroughly unpredictable horror-comedy — and an immensely entertaining one, too." Meanwhile, at SxSW, IGN gave it a slightly mixed review that still leaned towards the positive, calling the movie "a dark, hilarious, and consistently twisted feature that amuses for long periods, bores in patches, and astounds in others still."
Audiences still have some time to wait to see if the reviews are true, as John Dies at the End opens on VOD and iTunes on December 27th and in limited release on January 25, 2013. So, until then, check out the terrific new retro poster below.
John Dies at the End was based on the novel of the same name written by Cracked writer and editor David Wong, the pseudonym for Jason Pargin, and, surprisingly, has a sequel novel as well: This Book is Full of Spiders. Should John Dies at the End prove to be even a modest hit, Coscarelli could adapt that book into a sequel. If that isn't enough of an enticement, there's also an excellent cast as well, including Paul Giamatti (John Adams), Doug Jones (Hellboy), Clancy Brown (Cowboys and Aliens) and Glynn Turman (Takers, Super 8).
