Today's Hot Announcement Trailer: Star Trek Into Darkness Teaser Offers First Look at Sequel

"So, shall we begin?"
Back in October, J.J. Abrams revealed three frames worth of footage of his upcoming sequel Star Trek Into Darkness on Conan, proving that the director is a master at teasing his audience. Now an "announcement teaser trailer" has been released, offering only a minute of the trailer that will be released in its entirety next week. At least it's longer than three frames, right?
So what "darkness" will Kirk (Chris Pine) and his crew be facing this time? Is Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC's Sherlock, Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy) playing Khan or not? While we're not sure whether those questions are answered, we're confident the teaser will be one of the most watched and re-watched videos online. Until next week, of course.

Not enough? Want a little more? No problem. The Japanese version below (via Slashfilm) tacks on an additional 15 seconds at the end.
Kirk's hand up against the glass seemingly recalls the ending moment of Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, though whether Into Darkness is merely paying homage or duplicating the Spock sacrifice play remains to be seen. That shot will also do nothing to stop the rampant online discussion that Cumberbatch is playing Khan, though it would seem unusual for Abrams and screenwriters Roberto Orci, Alex Kurtzman and Damon Lindelof to have successfully created an alternate Star Trek timeline with the 2009 reboot only to go back and simply remake Wrath of Khan. We're guessing Abrams is up to his usual tricky misdirection.
We'll also note that Star Trek actor Simon Pegg has denied the Khan rumors, while Karl Urban seemingly "slipped" in July and revealed that Cumberbatch would be playing Gary Mitchell, though whether Urban was making a mistake or putting fans off the scent is still a mystery.
For those left wondering what Into Darkness is about, we're not sure the synopsis will help much, but you can check it out below regardless.
