Today's Hot Trailer: Tom Cruise Saves the Planet From Oblivion

It's the end of the world as Tom Cruise knows it.
Tom Cruise has been playing a lot of Jacks recently, notably Jack Reacher in the aptly-named, upcoming action thriller Jack Reacher and earlier this year as Stacee Jaxx in the (choose your own adjective expressing disappointment) musical Rock of Ages. The latest "Jack" character is Oblivion's Jack Harper, who patrols an uninhabited earth and repairs damaged drones on the battle-ravaged planet's surface.
Rescuing Trailers from extinction
From the looks of the first trailer, Oblivion will no doubt be compared to Pixar/Disney's Wall-E, as Cruise sits and overlooks an empty planet. And, considering one of the movie's writers is Michael Arndt, who did not write Wall-E but wrote Toy Story 3 for Pixar, perhaps there's some influence there. However, it's the crash landing of Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) in some kind of life-sustaining cocoon pod at the end of the trailer that sets Oblivion apart, as the arrival rattles Cruise's worldview and opens him up to a new reality. Wait, that's also like Wall-E.
Well, in any event, Oblivion can boast a keen visual sense from director Joseph Kosinski — who has clearly learned a thing or two since Tron: Legacy — and co-stars Morgan Freeman as some kind of cigar-smoking mystery man. Take that, Wall-E!
Oblivion was based on Kosinski's upcoming graphic novel of the same name which was initially adapted by William Monahan (The Departed) and Karl Gadjusek (Trespass) before Arndt took over. The cast includes Andrea Riseborough (W.E.) and and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (HBO's Game of Thrones). Check out the poster below.
