The Flick: Yelling to the Sky
The Skinny: The feature debut of writer-director Victoria Mahoney, Yelling to the Sky premeired at the 2011 Berlin Film Festival, where it was nominated for the prestigious Golden Bear. Though the movie has received mixed reviews, Mahoney has been almost universally praised for her directorial vision, with Filmmaker magazine lauding her "powerful, emotionally nuanced debut."
The Players: Zoe Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) stars as Sweetness, one of two daughters of a dysfunctional mixed-race family living in Queens. With an angry drunk of a father (Jason Clarke) and a neglectful, mentally ill mother (Yolanda Ross), Sweetness and her sister (Antonique Smith) are too often left to fend for themselves. When a neighborhood bully (Gabourey Sidibe) starts harassing Sweetness, she decides to change her life and gets mixed up in the drug business.
