Extreme Fans: The Zombie Apocalypse Is Real...to Some
12.16.12 by Ryan
Take a seat, vampires. 2013 is poised to be a huge year for the zombie: The second half of AMC's third season of The Walking Dead; the release of zombie rom-com Warm Bodies; and Brad Pitt will fight off the zombie hordes in World War Z next summer, to name but a few. Clearly, there is a huge fanbase for the undead, but there are some among us that aren't simply fans, they're true believers of an eventual zombie apocalypse.
Discovery Channel's upcoming special Zombie Apocalypse examines just that, as it follows four individuals who don't plan on being surprised by a zombie uprising. And, according to what one expert says in a clip from the special, their fears may not be unfounded. "A zombie pandemic... is something that is plausible, it's something that at least in terms of spread, is very likely," explains Dr. Robert Smith, who works in the department of mathematics at the University of Ottawa. "Everything really depends on how fast a zombie virus takes to transform its victims."
Intrigued? Laughing from disbelief? Apparently, there's even more science to demonstrate that zombies could, possibly, maybe, happen. According to Dr. Steven Schlozman, Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of The Zombie Autopsies, it all starts with a dysfunction in both the frontal lobe and cerebellum. "The frontal lobe is what helps us to understand complex problems," Schlozman told The Huffington Post. "It allows you to do three or four things at the same time and it also, importantly, allows you to distinguish between what's the right thing to do and the wrong thing to do. Some people might even say it helps you distinguish between good and evil."
Schlozman has some other theories on how a virus would spread, and it would likely have to airborne rather than come from a zombie bite. "This contagion would have to make those affected hungry," said Schlozman. "That's a hard one because when you're sick, you're not hungry."
