"Negotiation's over. Sentence is death."
Journey to a post-apocalyptic world in which the cities are the size of countries, criminals can slow time, and the last thing you want to do is get on the bad side of the law.
The Flick: Dredd (2012)
The Skinny: Produced by Academy Award-winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and his DNA Films production company, Dredd was written for the screen by Alex Garland, who wrote the script for Boyle's Sunshine. A far more faithful adaptation of the popular British comic book character created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra than the 1995 Judge Dredd movie that starred Sylvester Stallone, Dredd has been hailed by comic book fans and critics alike as the Judge Dredd "movie fans have been waiting for," with director Pete Travis receiving praise for the movie's action and grim, unrelentingly violent tone.
The Players: Karl Urban ("Bones" in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek reboot) stars as Judge Dredd, a hard-nosed lawman with the authority of judge, jury and executioner who patrols the mean streets of Mega-City One, a megalopolis with a population of 800 million residents. With a rookie partner with psychic abilities (Olivia Thirlby) by his side, Dredd dares take on ruthless drug lord Ma-Ma (Lena Heady), who has been peddling a new drug from the 200-story vertical slum in which her clan resides. Langley Kirkwood and Deobia Oparei also star.
