"We're cops, everyone wants to kill us."
Navigate the mean streets of South Central Los Angeles over an eight-month period with two young cops who find themselves targeted by a drug cartel.
The Flick: End of Watch
The Skinny: Writer-director David Ayer (Training Day, Harsh Times) wrote the screenplay for End of Watch in a mere 6 days and, thirteen months and just $7 million later, the movie was completed. Initially, the entire movie was to be in the "found footage" format, but Ayer decided to "augment" the hand-held footage with standard camera footage once in the editing room. By the end of its 17-week run in theaters, End of Watch had quadrupled its budget in ticket sales and won over a great many critics, earning an 85% approval rating on aggregate review site RottenTomatoes.
The Players: Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña star as Brian Taylor and Mike Zavala, close friends and partners in the LAPD who are considered heroes after rescuing children from a fire. While investigating an unsolved murder, the pair run afoul of a powerful drug cartel trafficking in weapons and women and they become the ones with targets on their backs. Frank Grillo and Anna Kendrick also star.
