The Flick: Day of the Falcon (formerly Black Thirst and Black Gold)
The Skinny: Award-winning filmmaker Jean-Jacques Annaud (Seven Years in Tibet, Two Brothers) wrote and directed this adaptation of Hans Ruesch's 1957 novel South of the Heart: A Novel of Modern Arabia. Filmed in Tunisia and Qatar on a budget of $55 million, it was produced by Tarak Ben Ammar, the former manager of Michael Jackson's HIStory World Tour.
The Players: Antonio Banderas stars as Emir Nesib, a Sultan of a group of Arab tribes who has long been in conflict with Sultan Amar (Mark Strong) over a vast barren land called the "Yellow Belt" that borders their two territories. Peace is finally reached between the two Sultans when it is agreed that the land shall be designated a no man's land. However, Nesib, desperate for money, strikes a deal with an American oil company to drill in the Yellow Belt, breaking the truce and incurring the wrath of Amar. Freida Pinto and Corey Johnson also star.
