In celebration of the 85th Academy Awards on Sunday, tonight's feature is Dances with Wolves, the epic 1990 Western directed, produced and starring Kevin Costner that won seven Oscars at the 63rd Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. The screenplay was adapted from the 1988 novel Dances with Wolves by the author, Michael Blake.
The movie opens during the Civil War, with wounded First Lieutenant John J. Dunbar (Costner) making a suicide run at the Confederate front lines that ends up turning the tide of the battle in favor of the Union army. Cited for bravery and awarded a horse and his choice of posts, Dunbar requests to be transferred to Fort Sedgwick on the western frontier. Dunbar has several run-ins with the native Sioux, but he eventually forms bonds of friendship and love within the tribe, bonds that are put to the test when the U.S. army arrives and threatens "his people."
