"Danger is real. Fear is a choice."
Will Smith's last movie was Men in Black III, though had he taken Quentin Tarantino's offer, he would have played the title character in Django Unchained. "He didn't walk away from it because he was scared of the material," Tarantino said to Playboy about Smith last December. "It just wasn't 100 percent right, and we didn't have time to try to make it that way."
Instead, Smith decided to again join forces with his son Jaden Smith (The Karate Kid) for the sci-fi movie After Earth, which was not exactly a choice devoid of risk. After Earth was written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan, who jump-started his career with the 1999 thriller The Sixth Sense, which created a memorable catchphrase about seeing dead people and went on to become an international box office hit. Lately, however, Shyamalan hasn't had as much success — unless you loved 2008's The Happening and 2010's The Last Airbender, in which case, he's on a roll. The latest trailer for the upcoming movie shows that both Shyamalan and the Smiths are taking a measured risk in telling an intimate father-and-son story on a grand scale, with the two characters crash-landing on an Earth that humanity has abandoned for a thousand years. Once they arrive, they a find a planet that is no longer hospitable for humans.
