In Honor of Bomb Girls, Learn All the Tricks and Tips for Getting Glamorous

"Poise is simply a state of mind."
From the elegance of Gladys Witham to the swagger of Betty McRae, it's clear that the ladies in Bomb Girls know all about charm, poise and how to carry themselves — even Kate's occasional awkwardness is charming. Because the 1940s were so glamorous, we figured that the best place to learn about grace and charm would be from a vintage instructional video from the period, and did we ever find a good one.
Keep Glam and Carry On
Our favorite lessons from the instructional film include: everyone will be envious of your wardrobe if you keep up with your mending (11:15), the wrong gloves can positively ruin a job interview (10:02), and a woman used to be able to earn college credit by washing her face (14:45). Though the advice Ms. Stuyvesant gives is didactic and overly rigid, it's hard to argue against the basic idea that if you're sure you look you're best, you'll be more at ease. Perhaps what's most problematic with this video is the decidedly narrow definition of the phrase "looking your best." But at least we now know the correct way to wash a face.
