MAN OF STEEL 2 Ever since it was first announced that the release of Zack Snyder's untitled follow-up to Man of Steel, commonly referred to as Superman vs. Batman, would be pushed back a year to May 6, 2016, the internet has been rife with rumors and speculation about the possible reasons for the delay, from new Batman Ben Affleck being injured to Warner Bros. afraid to battle it out with Marvel's The Avengers: Age of Ultron. However, the real reason could be far more mundane than anyone suspects. According to Academy Award-winner Jeremy Irons, who will be playing Bat-butler Alfred Pennyworth in the movie, the "script isn't entirely finished" yet.
Batman The delay of Man of Steel 2 isn't all bad news, of course. With more time before principal photography begins, the actors have more time to get into superheroic shape for their respective roles. We already know how ripped Henry Cavill can get, but what about Affleck, who will turn 42 during filming? According to Affleck's trainer, Rehan Jalali, there's nothing to worry about. Jalali, who also trained Affleck for The Town tweeted that Affleck will be the "Biggest/Leanest/Baddest Batman Eva."
Superman The extra pre-production time afforded by the delay also gives Academy Award-nominated costume designer Michael Wilkinson (American Hustle) more time to work on "tweaking the Superman suit." What those tweaks are remain unknown, but Wilkinson recently revealed to Esquire that "it all comes down to the crotch" when designing superhero suits.
You have to present things in an appealing way but something that's not too confronting and has the right tone for the film. It's something where you have to use all of your costuming skills to find that balance. I think having done 300 I'm pretty much an expert on codpieces. I remember on that film we had five different shapes and we gave them all names. For example, we had "the spider." We had "the donkey." We had all different shapes for different fellows.
SHOWDOWN And, speaking of Man of Steel 2's move to May 6, 2016, the new release date for the movie has it opening against one of Marvel's scheduled-but-unannounced movies, possibly the sequel to Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Marvel seems unfazed by the prospect of a showdown between its superhero(es) and Superman's pals, with President of Production Kevin Feige telling SlashFilm, "We’re certainly keeping the date there and we’ll announce what that movie is, I assume, in the next few months."
PAN Rooney Mara is in negotiations to join Warner's Peter Pan update as Tiger Lily, reports TheWrap. Written by Jason Fuchs (Ragz), Pan will tell the story of how a young orphan from London found his way to Neverland and became the hero Peter Pan. The title role has yet to be cast, but Hugh Jackman and Garrett Hedlund are expected to star as Blackbeard and Captain Hook, respectively. Joe Wright (Anna Karenina) will direct.
ALICE Variety reports that Helena Bonham Carter will reprise the role of the Red Queen in Disney's Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to 2010's Alice in Wonderland. Johnny Depp and Mia Wasikowska will also return in their respective roles, but no other casting announcements have been made, as of yet. James Bobin (Muppets Most Wanted) will take over for Tim Burton as director. The movie is slated to open May 27, 2016.
