Nightcrawler and Gambit to Join X-Men: Apocalypse?

Earlier today, Fox set release dates for several Marvel-related movies, including X-Men: Apocalypse, the follow-up to May's X-Men: Days of Future Past, and now we have an idea s to which mutants (beside Wolverine) will make it into the sequel. The mutant cast of Days of Future Past is already astronomical, blending together the casts of the original X-Men trilogy and X-Men: First Class as well as assorted new characters mixed in just for fun, but director Bryan Singer revealed to Spanish-language Cine Premiere (via Comic Book Movie) that he would like to add two more X-Men for good measure.
"I'm considering a Gambit and potentially a young Nightcrawler for Apocalypse," said Singer (likely in English, which has now been translated into Spanish and back into English). "[I was] going to have Nightcrawler appear [in Days of Future Past] and even wrote a scene, but I felt that we were forcing too many mutants known history."
Nightcrawler was portrayed by Alan Cumming in X2: X-Men United, but the character has yet to return in future sequels. Cumming has publicly said he would like to return to the role, but Singer's mention of a "young Nightcrawler" implies that Cumming will not be asked to return.
Gambit, meanwhile, was played by Taylor Kitsch in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, though he is also likely not to return as X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner has said that she's "dying to do a Gambit movie" with Channing Tatum, who is apparently interested.
Outside of casting, the other Apocalypse question is how Singer will deal with the timeline issues that comes with using both Gambit and Nightcrawler. Singer has admitted that Apocalypse will "deal with the notion of ancient mutants – the fact they were born and existed thousands of years ago," but will "take place in the ’80s" and "introduce familiar characters in a younger time." However, in X2, Nightcrawler is introduced to the X-Men for the first time. Gambit is easier to deal with, since the portion of X-Men Origins: Wolverine where Gambit appears was set in the 1980s, though whether anything in the much-maligned Origins will have an impact on Apocalypse or any X-Men movie remains to be seen.
Of course, before anything happens with Apocalypse, Days of Future Past will open in theaters on May 23. Considering the Apocalypse release date, Fox is clearly confident that audiences will be excited to watch X-Men movies for years to come.
